Central Wisconsin Select (CWS) Summer Update

Knowing that not all families will be able to attend our Tuesday meeting, we wanted to share some important highlights and points of emphasis as we kick off the season.

First and foremost, please remember that our program runs entirely on volunteer power. It takes a massive amount of coordination, time, and effort behind the scenes to handle registrations and get everything up and running, so we deeply appreciate your patience and support. Because lacrosse is still a relatively new sport to our community, getting a season off the ground requires a significant commitment of both time and financial resources from everyone involved.

It is also important to note the competitive level of our program. Central Wisconsin Select is designed for players with experience and is not necessarily the best place for beginners to start playing. However, if you or someone you know is looking to get into the sport, our program is more than happy to mentor anyone wanting to learn. We are incredibly fortunate to have two wonderful local youth programs—Wausau and Stevens Point Area Youth Lacrosse—to help new players build their foundational skills. Furthermore, CWS doesn't just draw from these two communities; we proudly welcome players and families from all over the region.

Looking Ahead to Summer

We realize that summer is a busy time for everyone. However, we hope that through consistent practice and a collaborative team effort between players, coaches, and families, we will build something special and have an incredible summer.

To all of our families: tournaments are incredibly fun! Beyond the games themselves, hanging out in the evenings, bonding with the players, and getting to know other families is what makes the summer lacrosse experience truly unforgettable. Let's make it an amazing season!

Jersey Requirements

Beginning in the 2026 season, all players will purchase a full uniform package for $125. This set includes a reversible jersey, a shooter shirt, and shorts. Because these uniforms are yours to keep, they can be used for multiple seasons without the need for a new purchase.

Sizing & Numbers Jerseys have been purchased in bulk. During equipment handouts, coaches and CWS staff will assist with sizing and do our best to match players with their preferred jersey numbers whenever possible.

Customization & Resale

  • Name Customization: After jerseys are distributed, families may choose to have the player's name added for an additional fee (details on this option are still pending).
  • Resale Option: At the end of the season, families have the option to resell their uniform to a future player for the following year.

HELMET RENTAL

Helmet Requirements & Rentals Players have the option to rent a program helmet for $50 (availability of decals varies).

Safety Standards All lacrosse helmets must be NOCSAE Certified to meet safety standards. You can find more information on these regulations here.

Purchasing Advice

  • Color: If you are looking to purchase your own, we recommend choosing a black helmet.
  • Expert Guidance: We strongly encourage you to consult with a coach before buying any equipment—especially if purchasing second-hand—to ensure it meets current safety and program regulations.

PARENT MEETING AGENDA

Program Support and Volunteers

·        CWS and SPYL were built through the vision and dedication of Jim Mendyke and his family. Much of what you see at Goerke, including the scoreboard, reflects their passion and investment in this program.

·        Our program depends on volunteers and coaches, and several older players are aging out of the program.

·        We welcome help with social media, communication, leadership, and general support for the coaches.

Coaches

·        This season’s coaches are TJ Phillis, Bob Cvykus, and Trevor Maki.

·        They may also be supported by alumni players throughout the season.

Player Expectations

·        Players should be helpful, respectful, and willing to support the program.

·        Returning players can help mentor younger players both on and off the field.

·        Please help us care for our community and facilities by cleaning up after yourselves and leaving each site better than you found it.

·        Players should arrive with the proper equipment and be well hydrated.

Practice Information

·        Please arrive on time and be ready to help when needed. All coaches are volunteers, and everyone can contribute.

·        Monday and Tuesday: Goerke Field, 5:50 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

·        Thursday: DC Everest Stiehm Stadium, 5:50 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

·        The Thursday location helps reduce travel for our Wausau players.

·        If your player is practice-only but may be available for a tournament, please let us know.

Equipment

·        Helmet rentals are $50, new this year. We will be in the coming year look to purchase new helmets, further encourage players to purchase their own.

·        If your player needs help with stringing or stick care, please see the coaches. The team also has string and mesh kits available for purchase.

·        Jersey distribution begins Tuesday. Players from volunteer families will receive first choice, followed by registration order.

·        Ok, still trying to figure out if a player/parent who is participating in one tournament, what they will use (or rent) for jersey if they do not wish to purchase!

Communication and Weather

·        Communication will be handled through Crossbar.

·        Weather updates will be shared as needed.

·        We will do everything we can to hold practice. In severe weather, we will move to a secure location or cancel if necessary.

·        Any changes will be communicated through Crossbar and by email as early as possible.

·        If early travel or transportation is a challenge, please use Crossbar to coordinate carpooling or speak with a coach. We will do our best to help families connect.

·        Please help before, during, and after events whenever you can.

·        We expect players, coaches, and families to treat others with respect, care for facilities, support the program, and represent CWS well.

·        For tournaments, all teams will use US Lax, including tournament apps and related tools.

·        Families should arrive one hour early.

·        Families are encouraged to help with setup, takedown, snacks, and general support.
